Aromacare for Moods and Motions in Complex Neurological Disease
Although developments in scientific knowledge in the fields of neurology and molecular biology are advancing, and significant progress in the treatment of patients with progressive neurological disease (PND) is made, most treatments are focused on the reduction of symptoms and improving quality of life. Many patients seek support from complementary therapies to increase their quality of life. Essential oils have shown to influence a range of neurotransmitters in the brain and thereby impact mood and even psychotic symptoms, movement and sleep. Although there are no objective clinical studies in patients yet, truly remarkable and positive changes in patients are reported, especially those with Parkinson and Huntington which had a profound impact on their peace of mind. Madeleine will tune into some of the more promising ones and offer insights on their benefits and limitations for their safe use, illustrated by compelling cases.

The enchantment and wisdom of natural fragrances and essential oils, as vehicles for exploration of our internal worlds and for connecting with the world around us
Aromatherapists have an opportunity to create essential oils’ blends that are therapeutic not only because of their constituents, but because of their harmonious beauty and the emotions they elicit in each client. By knowing how to work in a deep level with scent, aromatherapists (and therapists who use scent) can help their clients to build self-awareness and renew their connection with the world around them. Fragrance can be a vehicle to wellbeing.
In this talk Michele will take us through practical tips on how to blend essential oils to create harmonious compositions, following the principles of perfumery, and will share some examples from her practice, on how to use scent therapeutically to facilitate the exploration of an inner journey that can be meaningful and positive.

Working with those who have addictions to street drugs, alcohol, or other substances.
What do we mean by addiction? And is the addict really someone ‘other’ than those of us without substance dependencies?
Although there are certainly chemical substances which are more likely to become addictive, there are also behaviours without the use of chemical substances, which might be termed addictive.
What is happening here?
The focus of this particular workshop will indeed be on substance abuse, particularly alcohol, street drugs and certain prescribed pharmaceuticals, as we may have safety considerations where these have caused chronic somatic dysfunction or damage.
I have deliberately chosen a long winded title which puts the client before their condition.
Aromatherapy of itself will not ‘cure’ an addiction to addictive substances.
So – rather than working with ‘the addiction’ how do we best work with each individual client, each individual session? In some ways, (other than those safety aspects) we are working with our bread-and -butter client presentations.
The work is both simpler – and more complex – than we might suppose.
We will explore the kinds of presentations these clients are likely to present with.
And, crucially, we need to explore how to work with clients who are often hyperaroused, hypersensitised in their response to both their external environments, and their own internal perceptions : how do we, as practitioners, ‘hold the space’?
