Gratitude and Appreciation
November is a very busy time, especially for IFPA, as we have our AGM/CPD day on 23rd November 2024. We have an amazing line-up of professional speakers starting with Ken Kunieda, followed by Rhiannon Lewis, Raquel Costa, and JK Delapp, each one bringing their speciality topic. It’s an event not to be missed! If you have not yet registered, please do so and be part of this amazing team of speakers. Each attendee will receive a ‘Certificate of Attendance’ with 6 CPD points. We hope to see you there!

Christine Courtney’s Blog

As we enter this season of reflection and thanksgiving, I find myself drawn to share a deeply personal perspective on gratitude – one that has been shaped by my journey into aromatherapy and my role of IFPA Chair.
The Unexpected Path to Aromatherapy
Life often takes us on unexpected journeys. For me, the path to becoming an Aromatherapist was paved with challenges that, at the time, seemed insurmountable. Looking back, I realise that these difficult moments were, in fact, signposts guiding me towards an incredible future, one I could never have imagined during those dark times. What began as a simple distraction, a momentary escape from life’s pressures, blossomed into a passion and, ultimately, a fulfilling career. This transformation fills me with immense gratitude. The ability to blend essential oils and vegetable oils to support others’ well-being is a gift I cherish daily. I find myself constantly thankful for the oils themselves, the knowledge I’ve gained, and even the life changes that brought me to this point.
Finding Gratitude in Scent
Yet, even as an Aromatherapist, there are times when conventional gratitude practices feel challenging. In those moments when listing things to be grateful for seems impossible, I turn to the oils themselves. The simple act of opening a bottle and inhaling deeply never fails to awaken my sense of appreciation. Whether it’s the sweet, spicy notes of Cardamom or the earthy, grounding scent of Vetiver, these aromas instantly reconnect me to the wonder and beauty of our craft. They serve as powerful reminders of nature’s gifts and our ability to harness them for healing and comfort.
Gratitude within our Community
As the current Chair of IFPA, my sense of gratitude extends beyond my personal journey to encompass our entire community. I’m thrilled that we will be hosting our first-ever online CPD event, featuring four exceptional speakers. This milestone is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our marketing subcommittee, who have poured their energy into making this event a reality.
Embracing Gratitude in Practice
As we move through this month and beyond, I encourage each of you to find your own unique ways of cultivating gratitude and maybe even share it with your community on the members’ Facebook group.

Base Oil of the month

Evening Primrose – (Oenothera biennis)

This powerful cold pressed base oil is extracted from the seeds and has some magical properties. Rich in fatty acids in particular gamma linoleic acid which is fragile and can be destroyed by light or heat and must be stored in a cool dark place. It supports inflammatory bowel disease and helps with immunity. When used externally, it is effective for the treatment of eczema, psoriasis, PMS, and weight reduction.

It also helps to lower blood pressure and inhibit cholesterol. It has been used for the treatment of ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. The North Americans made an infusion of the seeds to heal wounds.

In India it was reported that it helps kill tumour cells in association with a rapid increase in free radical generation (Ramesh 1992).
