The IFPA has established - and continues to examine & revise where necessary - educational standards for aromatherapy, including underpinning anatomy & physiology and massage. Our students can be assured that by attending an IFPA accredited course they are undertaking a rigorous training programme, leading to a recognized qualification which will enable them to seek employment in both the private and public sectors. Therapist’s who successfully complete an IFPA Accredited Course are automatically eligible to apply for Full Membership of the IFPA
The IFPA syllabi have been benchmarked against the National Occupational Standard for Aromatherapy and more than meet its requirements. Accordingly it is anticipated that full members of the IFPA will be eligible for entry on to the National Register of Aromatherapists once it has been established as part of the voluntary self-regulation of aromatherapy
All our accredited courses are taught to a core curriculum as detailed in the current IFPA syllabi. Aromatherapy tutors must meet agreed criteria and the student staff ratio is also set in order for students to benefit from small class numbers and excellent teaching.
However there are many aspects to aromatherapy, ranging from the clinical to the scientific and esoteric. The IFPA respect the individuality of training establishments and recognize that some do include additional course content that reflects their area of expertise. Prospective students are advised to examine their expectations and to choose a training venue that most closely meets their own needs.
All therapists must keep up to date in order to practise effectively and safely. The IFPA requires each therapist to undertake 36 hours of continuous professional training over a three year period. Courses are offered through IFPA accredited schools and our Regional Groups network, but therapists are free to go outside of these where their individual needs are better met. In addition other forms of CPD such as book reviews and research are also acceptable to the IFPA.
Educational establishments who achieve Accreditation of their Aromatherapy Training Course have successfully passed through a rigorous assessment process, involving the examination and evaluation of their course content, teaching strategies, learning outcomes and assessment processes as well as inspection of premises in which training is carried out. Regular re-inspections are conducted at periodic intervals to ensure standards are maintained.
